Where is Reunion Island located?
Reunion Island is located in the Indian Ocean, east of the southern part of the African continent, and between the islands of Madagascar and Mauritius. It is around 110 miles (180 km) southwest of Mauritius and 420 miles (680 km) east of Madagascar. It is, therefore, technically considered a part of Africa.
What is Reunion Island known for?
Reunion Island is one of the smallest countries in Africa, with only about 2,512 km² (970 mi²) of space. It is known for having one of the world’s most active volcanoes (Piton de la Fournaise) and for its rich history of being a slave colony where not only Africans but a mix of Asians and other races were enslaved. This is one of the reasons the Island has a diverse mixture of local races, among which 30% are caucasian. Reunion also happens to be the place where the debris of the infamous MH370 plane was discovered.
Reunion Island experiences an almost uniform climate throughout the year with very little changes in climate between the seasons. The climate is tropical and ranges between 18 degrees Celsius to around 31 degrees Celsius.
